A Paper Canoe Projects and Cahoots Theatre production in association with Native Earth. Written by Jani Lauzon, directed by Marjorie Chan, with musical direction and composition by Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate. I Call Myself Princess tells the story of a Métis opera student who discovers a 1918 opera based on the life of a real Cherokee man, exploring cultural appropriation, identity, and the reclamation of Indigenous voices. Nominated for the 2018 My Entertainment World’s Critics’ Pick Award for Outstanding New Musical.
A Theatre New Brunswick production written and composed by Natalie Sappier (Samaqani Cocahq) and choreographed/performed by Aria Evans. Finding Wolastoq Voice is a powerful theatrical and dance journey through the Wolastoq stories, heritage, and spirituality, blending contemporary dance, music, and narrative to share the voice of the river. Winner of the 2018 My Entertainment World’s Critics’ Pick Award for Outstanding Dance Performance (Aria Evans).
A Native Earth production in partnership with Blyth Festival, Ipperwash is written and directed by Falen Johnson, with dramaturgy by Yvette Nolan. The story sheds light on the aftermath of the Ipperwash Crisis, weaving personal and historical narratives of the Stoney Point Reserve and Camp Ipperwash. Nominated for the 2018 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play (Falen Johnson) and Outstanding Lighting Design (Michelle Ramsay).
A Punctuate! Theatre and Alberta Aboriginal Performing Arts co-production in association with Native Earth and Theatre Centre. Written & directed by Matthew MacKenzie, with choreography by Monica Dottor, Bears follows one man’s journey through the wilderness of Western Canada, blending physical theatre, satire, and an urgent environmental message. Winner of the 2018 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Production, with multiple nominations across direction, design, and performance.
